Mountain escape – Zlatibor
Zlatibor is one of the most beautiful and popular mountain destinations in Serbia, located in the southwestern part of the country, close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The region is known for its fresh mountain air, picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a wide range of activities for visitors throughout the year.
Zlatibor is located approximately 230 km from Belgrade and 420 km from Sofia. The mountain lies at an average altitude of around 1,000 metres, while its highest peak, Tornik, reaches 1,496 metres. The resort centre of Zlatibor combines the cosy atmosphere of a small mountain town with all the conveniences of modern tourism, including hotels, villas, restaurants, and a variety of entertainment options.
The climate is moderately mountainous, with cool summers and snowy winters, making Zlatibor an ideal destination for both summer and winter holidays.
How to get to Zlatibor?
Travelling from Sofia to Zlatibor by car is the most convenient and flexible option, allowing you to travel at your own pace and stop along the way whenever you wish. Where to stay in Zlatibor?
Finding the right place to stay can make a big difference when visiting Zlatibor, especially if you want to explore the town on foot while still having easy access to your car. During our stay, we chose Alibi Zlatibor Inn, and it turned out to be an excellent choice.
One of the things we appreciated most was the good value for money. The rooms are spacious, cosy and well maintained, with a comfortable, homely atmosphere. Everything is thoughtfully arranged and practical, making it easy to feel relaxed from the moment you arrive. Whether you are staying for just a couple of nights or planning a longer trip, the hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable stay.
📍 A Great Location in the Centre
The hotel’s central location is definitely one of its biggest advantages. It is within walking distance of Zlatibor Lake, the park, restaurants, cafés and many of the main attractions in the resort. This was particularly convenient for us, as we could leave the car at the hotel and explore the centre on foot, especially in the evenings.
Another major advantage for travellers arriving by car is the private parking. Having a secure parking space at the hotel makes the whole experience much easier, particularly in the busy summer season when finding a parking spot in central Zlatibor can be challenging.
Overall, Alibi Zlatibor Inn is a great option if you are looking for a comfortable, well-located hotel in the heart of Zlatibor without paying for a luxury resort. For us, the combination of location, comfort and parking made it a very practical base for exploring the surrounding area.
First Impressions of Zlatibor
We arrived in Zlatibor late in the evening, when the town was already wrapped in a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere. Despite being tired after the journey, we decided to take a walk through the town park by the lake – one of the liveliest and most pleasant spots in the resort.
The lights reflecting on the water created a cosy atmosphere and immediately made us feel that we had arrived in the right place. One of the biggest surprises of the evening was the light and water show, which turned our simple evening stroll into a little celebration. The dancing water fountains, illuminated by colourful lights, gave the park a modern yet wonderfully romantic atmosphere. All around us were families with children, couples and travellers simply enjoying the moment.
After our walk, hunger eventually caught up with us, so we opted for something quick but incredibly delicious – juicy sandwiches, which turned out to be the perfect ending to a long day of travelling. And, of course, we couldn’t resist dessert: warm pancakes with chocolate, fragrant and indulgent enough to bring us a little extra happiness at the end of the evening.
And so, with a simple dinner, something sweet and our first taste of Zlatibor after dark, our first evening in the mountains came to an end in the best possible way.
What to See Around Zlatibor?
El Paso City
El Paso City is a unique themed park surrounded by beautiful nature, located approximately 14 km from the centre of Zlatibor. Rather than being a traditional tourist attraction, it feels like a small world of its own, divided into several distinct areas, each telling a different story and transporting visitors to a completely different era and culture.
Walking through the complex feels like travelling between Old Zlatibor, a Wild West cowboy town and an authentic Native American settlement. Each area has its own character, architecture and atmosphere, creating a surprisingly diverse experience within one park.
The “Old Zlatibor” area recreates life in the region during the 19th century. It features traditional wooden houses, farm buildings and various ethnographic elements typical of the area. Visitors can see everyday household objects, old tools and furniture that offer a glimpse into how local people lived before modernisation.
The atmosphere here is peaceful and authentic, and taking a walk through this part of the park is a great way to get a feel for Zlatibor’s traditions, craftsmanship and rural way of life in the past. It also provides an interesting contrast to the more playful Wild West and Native American sections that you will discover later in your visit.
The Cowboy Town is the most exciting and dynamic part of El Paso City. It recreates a typical American Wild West town, complete with banks, saloons, a jail, a sheriff’s office and wooden streets that look as if they are waiting for a classic high-noon showdown.
The area often comes alive with themed performances and demonstrations, giving visitors the chance to step into the world of a Western movie. It is particularly entertaining for children, but adults will have just as much fun exploring the authentic-looking setting and taking photos among the Wild West-style buildings and props.
The Native American Village adds another dimension to the experience, creating a striking contrast with the cowboy town through its connection with nature and its distinctive cultural atmosphere. Here, you will find traditional-style tipis, totems and decorative elements inspired by the cultures and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of North America.
Surrounded by greenery and located beside the water, this part of the park has a much more peaceful atmosphere. It is a lovely place to slow down, take some photos and discover a different cultural setting in an entertaining and accessible way.
Together, the three areas make El Paso City much more than just a themed park – it is an unusual journey through different worlds, where history, imagination and entertainment come together in one beautiful natural setting.
El Paso City is an excellent addition to any day trip around Zlatibor. It combines history, entertainment and education in a fun and engaging setting, making it a great choice for families with children as well as travellers looking for something a little different and outside the usual tourist attractions.
🎟️ Tickets & Opening Hours
Individual admission costs 800 Serbian dinars for adults and 400 dinars for children aged 3–14. Children under the age of 3 can enter free of charge.
There are also discounted group tickets for groups of more than 20 people. The adult ticket is 600 dinars, while the price for children remains 400 dinars.
The park is open every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM throughout the year, giving you plenty of flexibility when planning your visit.

Gostilje Waterfall
Gostilje Waterfall is one of the most beautiful natural attractions around Zlatibor. Located in the village of Gostilje, approximately 25 km from the centre of Zlatibor, it is a wonderful place to escape into nature and enjoy a peaceful walk away from the busy resort.
The waterfall is formed where the river flows over limestone rocks, creating an impressive main cascade followed by several smaller waterfalls further downstream. Surrounded by lush greenery, clear water and a tranquil natural setting, the area is perfect for a relaxing walk, photography or a picnic in nature.
The trail to the waterfall is relatively easy and pleasant. It starts at the car park near the entrance and follows a short path through a landscaped park, with beautiful views of the river along the way. After a short walk, you will reach the first and largest waterfall, where you can stop to admire the scenery and take some photos.
If you have more time, continue along the trail to discover the smaller cascades further downstream. The combination of rushing water, moss-covered rocks and dense vegetation makes the entire walk particularly picturesque.
Gostilje Waterfall is an easy and enjoyable excursion from Zlatibor and can easily be combined with other attractions in the surrounding area. It is especially worth visiting after a few days of exploring the resort itself, when a peaceful walk surrounded by nature is exactly what you need.
Tickets, Opening Hours & Facilities
Visiting Gostilje Waterfall requires an entrance ticket. Depending on the season and the latest available information, admission is approximately 250 Serbian dinars for adults and 100–150 dinars for children, while younger children may enter free of charge.
The site is generally open from around 9:00 AM to 7:00–8:00 PM during the summer, while winter opening hours are usually shorter, from approximately 9:00 AM to 4:30–5:00 PM. This gives you plenty of time to explore the waterfall and enjoy a leisurely walk around the area.
There is a large car park near the entrance, as well as several facilities that make the visit particularly convenient for families. You will find benches and resting areas, a children’s playground and pleasant walking paths along the river.

The Lake in the Centre of Zlatibor
The lake in the centre of Zlatibor, known as Kraljevo Jezero (King’s Lake), is one of the resort’s most recognisable and beloved landmarks. Surrounded by pedestrian paths, cafés and green spaces, it offers a peaceful escape right in the heart of the lively town centre.
During the day, the lake is a popular spot for a leisurely walk or a relaxing break. The calm surface reflects the surrounding mountains and sky, adding to the beauty and charm of the area. The paths and benches around the lake make it an inviting place for families, travellers and photographers alike.
In the warmer months, the lake provides a refreshing and pleasant atmosphere, while in the evening the area takes on a more romantic character. Soft lights illuminate the surroundings, cafés begin to fill up and people gather for an evening stroll. This is when Kraljevo Jezero really comes alive, creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere that makes it one of our favourite places to experience Zlatibor after sunset.
One of the biggest attractions around the lake is the water and light show, which takes place directly on Kraljevo Jezero. The fountains rise and “dance” in sync with the music, while colourful lights change and reflect across the surface of the water.
The show attracts plenty of visitors and adds a modern, vibrant touch to Zlatibor. For us, it was one of those unexpected little highlights that can turn a simple evening stroll into a memorable experience. If you are visiting Zlatibor, especially in the evening, it is definitely worth staying by the lake to see the show.
Sirogojno Village
The village of Sirogojno is best known for the Staro Selo (Old Village) Open-Air Museum, a fascinating cultural attraction that recreates a traditional mountain village and rural life from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The museum complex consists of around 50 authentic wooden houses, farm buildings and workshops, which were carefully relocated from surrounding villages and preserved as part of the open-air museum. Among the highlights is the historic Church of Saints Peter and Paul, dating back to 1764.
Walking through Staro Selo offers a fascinating glimpse into how people in the Zlatibor region lived, worked and organised their everyday lives before modernisation. The traditional houses, household objects, tools and workshops bring the past to life and make the museum feel much more authentic than a conventional indoor exhibition.
The open-air museum is also recognised as cultural heritage of national importance, making Sirogojno a particularly worthwhile stop for anyone interested in the history, traditions and rural culture of the Zlatibor region.
Visiting Sirogojno – Prices & Opening Hours
Before planning your visit to Sirogojno, it is worth checking the museum’s official website for the latest information on entrance fees, seasonal opening hours, exhibitions and special events.

Entrance to the Staro Selo Open-Air Museum is reasonably priced. Standard admission is usually around 150 Serbian dinars for adults, with reduced prices available for students and groups. A family ticket is approximately 400 dinars, while children under the age of 7 generally enter free of charge.
Opening hours vary depending on the season. From 1 April to 31 October, the museum is usually open every day from approximately 09:00 to 19:00. During the winter season, from 1 November to 31 March, opening hours are generally 09:00 to 16:00.
The longer summer opening hours make this an especially pleasant stop during a day trip around Zlatibor. Take your time walking between the traditional houses, explore the old workshops and enjoy the peaceful surroundings rather than rushing through the complex.
Our tip: Allow at least 1–2 hours for your visit. Sirogojno is not a place you need to rush through — part of its charm is simply walking between the old wooden houses and taking in the atmosphere of traditional Zlatibor.
Culinary Delights
One of the best ways to experience Zlatibor is through its food. The region is home to numerous traditional serbian kafanas and restaurants, where you can enjoy hearty local dishes in a cosy and authentic atmosphere.
Krcma Gaj is a great choice if you want to try traditional Serbian cuisine while enjoying beautiful views of the surrounding Zlatibor landscape. Located in a quieter part of the resort, this cosy restaurant offers a generous selection of authentic Serbian and Zlatibor dishes prepared using traditional local recipes.
Among the dishes worth trying are komplet lepinja, a traditional Zlatibor specialty made with freshly baked flatbread, kajmak, egg and pretop, as well as kačamak with kajmak, a hearty cornmeal dish that is deeply rooted in the local cuisine.
The restaurant is particularly appealing if you want to step away from the busy centre of Zlatibor and enjoy a slower, more relaxed meal surrounded by mountain scenery. It is the kind of place where the food, atmosphere and views come together to create a memorable taste of traditional Zlatibor.
What we particularly enjoyed about Krcma Gaj was its spacious terrace, where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh mountain air and beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and slopes. From the terrace, you can also admire panoramic views towards Čigota, making the setting especially enjoyable while having lunch or dinner.
The restaurant is a wonderful choice for a relaxed lunch after a day of exploring Zlatibor, but it is equally pleasant in the evening when the peaceful surroundings create a cosy atmosphere away from the busy resort centre.
Krcma Gaj is open daily from approximately 09:00 to 22:00, giving you plenty of flexibility to visit for an early lunch, an afternoon meal or dinner. Visitors particularly appreciate the restaurant for its welcoming atmosphere, homemade-style cuisine and friendly service. Its location slightly outside the centre is another advantage if you are looking for a quieter place where you can enjoy traditional Serbian food surrounded by nature.
