Christmas magic in Colmar

You don’t have to be religious to enjoy a Christmas market—all you need is a festive spirit! An essential part of every Christmas market is the Nativity scene, along with traditional holiday treats and sweets such as stollen, sausages (a more modern addition, as strict fasting was observed in the Middle Ages), mulled wine or special punch, and dozens of handcrafted items—decorations, toys, Christmas tree ornaments, and more.

The magic of Christmas can be felt in its fullest in a small town located in the Alsace region of northeastern France. Each of Colmar’s Christmas markets feels like a separate little village, distinguished by its own collection of passionate artisans. Set in different locations throughout the town and each with its own architectural character, these festive islands reflect the spirit of Colmar—friendly and authentic.

For six weeks, the entire old town of Colmar, miraculously preserved from the twists of history, transforms into one vast, multifaceted Christmas market. As you wander among around 180 stalls, you truly feel the magic of Christmas seep into you. It’s like reliving Christmas as a child once again—something you can’t control; it simply happens.

In Colmar, miracles happen… A great deal of serious preparation takes place behind the scenes: maintaining the stalls, setting up decorations and lighting, organizing entertainment, and carefully selecting the exhibitors. Most of the exhibitors, primarily from Alsace, are chosen based on the quality and originality of their products. This time of year is also especially inspiring for artists and craftsmen, who showcase their work in the Koïfhus—the old customs house.

One of the markets is located on the square next to the Cathedral (Place de la Cathédrale). This market is specially dedicated to lovers of gourmet delicacies. Tasting plates are available for on-site enjoyment.

The Gourmet Market (Marché Gourmand) is open from Monday to Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and from Friday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Overlooking the market, the elegant Dominican Church is illuminated at night, its magnificent 14th-century stained-glass windows glowing and making this remarkable square even more breathtaking. Stroll through the market’s sixty small wooden chalets and let yourself be tempted by original decorations that will make your Christmas tree the happiest of all!

Place de l’Ancienne Douane

Located in the heart of the Old Town, this square features around 50 chalets set around the impressive Schwendi Fountain. In the evening, the historic customs house—Koïfhus—is lit up, highlighting its magnificent Renaissance staircase. The market, spread along both banks of the Lauch River, extends all the way to the Koïfhus veranda. It is clear that the city’s old commercial heart is still beating! Here, contemporary creations can be found alongside traditional Christmas decorations.

This market recreates the atmosphere of a traditional Alsatian town. Dedicated to local products, it offers a wide variety of delicacies such as foie gras, cold cuts, wine, liqueurs, biscuits, and many other temptations. Surrounded by buildings ranging from traditional half-timbered houses to classic French-style architecture, the market gives visitors a wonderful glimpse into Alsace’s turbulent history—told through its distinctive architectural features.

La Petite Venise

The original layout of half-timbered houses lining both sides of the Lauch River gives this iconic Colmar district its name—Little Venice (La Petite Venise). At Christmas, it becomes a true paradise for children. Let the little ones lead the way as they gaze in wonder at rabbits and sheep, wander among the wooden chalets, and pause to admire the mechanical Nativity scene. They won’t leave this market without enjoying the traditional treats: a cup of sweet apple juice, a pony ride, and sending their letter in Santa’s mailbox.

The impressive former customs house reveals unexpected surprises at Christmas. Here you can enjoy the works of around twenty local artisans—potters, glassmakers, woodcarvers, jewelers, and other craftspeople who preserve and pass on the region’s traditional skills.

On the first floor, let your imagination roam with exhibits temporarily loaned from the Toy Museum (Musée du Jouet) for the Christmas market, most notably an impressive electric train.
